French Fauvist Painter and Sculptor, 1869-1954 Henri Matisse is considered the most important French artist of the 20th century and, along with Pablo Picasso, one of the most influential modernist painters of the last century. Matisse began studying drawing and painting in the 1890s. A student of the masters of Post-Impressionism, Matisse later made a reputation for himself as the leader of a group of painters known as Les Fauves. An ironic label given to them by a critic, the name reflected Matisse's aggressive strokes and bold use of primary colors. In 1905 Matisse gained sudden fame with three paintings, including Woman with the Hat, purchased by the wealthy American ex-patriot Gertrude Stein. Beyond painting, he worked with lithographs and sculpture, and during World War II he did a series of book designs. Later in his career he experimented with paper cutouts and designed decorations for the Dominican chapel in Vence, France. Charles Ferdinand Wimar
German-born American Painter b.1828 d.1862 was a painter of Western Native Americans and buffaloes. Born in Siegenburg, Germany, came to America at the age of 15, settled with his parents in St. Louis, Missouri. In 1846 he began studying painting with Leon Pomarede and went with his master on a trip up the Mississippi River. In 1852 he went to the D??sseldorf Academy to study with Emanuel Leutze. Wimar returned to St. Louis in 1856. He primarily occupied himself with the themes of Indian life, buffalo herds, life in the Great Plains, the theme of the wagon trains. He made three trips to the headwaters of the Mississippi.

1829-1898 English painter. He studied with J. M. Leigh (1808-60) from 1847 and in January 1851 enrolled at the Royal Academy Schools. In 1852 Marks and P. H. Calderon spent five months studying in Paris under Fran?ois-Edouard Picot and at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. The next year he made his d?but at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, where he exhibited annually until 1897. He was elected ARA in 1871 and RA in 1878.
